The golf course, Campo de Golfe do Santo da Serra, begun in 1937 with 9 holes and was then known as "Favelas".In 1967 the actual designation, Clube de Golfe do Santo da Serra (Madeira) was adopted together with its statutes, very similar to those in force today. The Club has actually about two hundred regular players, the total number of associates being over three thousand. Administration of Campo de Golfe do Santo da Serra is one of the responsibilities of the Club, its head office being located there. The golf course has now 18 holes and is being widened to nine more, built on annexed premises, where the former course was located. The new golf course, designed by well-known Robert Trent Jones, has an excellent quality rate for amateur golf as well as high competition tournaments. At Campo de Golfe do Santo da Serra, Madeira Island Open takes place each beginning of a new year. It is organised by P.G.A. European Tour and gathers the best european players.Well-known names of golf have won the Madeira Island Open, names such as Mark James, Mats Lanner, Santiago Luna and Jarmo Sandelin. In 1996 the Junion European Championship took place there. The course is Pair 72, with an overall length of 6.000 meters. Especially famous by its spectacularity, are holes 12 and 13 (pairs 5 and 3 respectively). The Club-house has excellent conditions for member informal meeting, either they may be local or from abroad. The action developped by Clube de Golfe do Santo da Serra towards the strenghtening and spreading of golf in Madeira is notorious, and has achieved excellent results concerning national and internation competition levels. Alexandre Henriques, Joao Pedro Sousa and Monica Snapper were national champions in young ratings ("boys", juvenile and junior, respectively). The 17 year-old Alexandre Henriques was European champion and World vice-champion , "boys" rating. Joao Sousa is the club duty professional, his excellent role in teaching and leading golf in Madeira being quite well-known
