What is it?

Cancer of the penis is a relatively rare malignant tumor that occurs almost always in patients with phimosis.

How do you get?

Patients with precarious hygienic habits, low income and lower social level, unable to properly externalize the glans.

The retained secretions around the glans is the factor most likely carcinogen.

How is it diagnosed?

Diagnostic suspicion arises in patients with a history of penile ulcers with a strong smell of smegma, resistant to various topical treatments.

The diagnosis is confirmed by pathological examination of the lesion.

Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common tumor focusing between 75% to 90% of cases.

How is it?

The patient should be staged to determine the extent of the disease. The treatment is surgical, and have to remove the lesion with a safety margin of 2 cm. The regional lymph nodes should also be excised.

The more advanced cases are treated with chemotherapy.

How is it treated?

This tumor can be avoided with proper hygiene habits.

Children with phimosis should be operated to be able to clean the glans.

Carcinoma does not occur in Jews who undergo circumcision during the first weeks of life.

This finding reinforces the hypothesis that the accumulation of smegma exert an irritating action on the site, which would favor the development of tumor.
