In its document, the Commission proposes five major objectives for the
EU to be translated into national targets and trajectories in each of
the Member States.
These objectives are representative of three priorities: smart growth, sustainable and inclusive, to be achieved will require a broad range of actions at national, EU and internationally.
The Commission also presents a set of seven flagship initiatives that aim to stimulate the progress under each priority theme and bind both the EU and its Member States.
The new strategy identifies, in short, the instruments will be used towards a strengthened economic governance, essential to obtaining better results than those achieved by the Lisbon Strategy. According to the timetable, this strategy must be approved by the European Council in two phases: a global approach and major objectives of the EU later this month at the Spring Summit, the integrated guidelines and national targets in June 2010. The evaluation reports under the 2020 Strategy Europe and the Stability and Growth Pact (SGP) will in the future, prepared simultaneously, although they continue to be separate instruments, and will ensure the integrity of the Covenant.
